Director's Dialogue December 2010
Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at 22:03 Jeff Lehman
I would like to start off by wishing all of you a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2010 was a great year for SAR and all of us on the Board of Directors of the IESARC are very excited about the upcoming events and changes coming in 2011.
This past month was a very eventful month. The Yu Search in Baldy was conducted very well and attended by a number of our SAR personnel. The results were not what we wanted, but successful in its own way.
The Gift of Love program was again attended by a number of our SAR units and we all would like to congratulate the entire committee for their hard work and efforts. A big thanks also goes out to Mike Ward who once again got all of us involved in this very worthwhile project.
Ed Rosenthal, our survivor that we found after days in the desert in the Joshua Tree National Park, held a nice thank you event for our SAR personnel in Pioneertown. He was a very gracious host along with his wife and daughter. Music, refreshments and a meal were very much appreciated. Seeing him alive and well makes you realize that the work that we do does affect lives of many and does not go unnoticed.
Congratulations are in order to Wes Podboy, his lovely wife Marie and to Dr. Debbie Bervel. You should know all three; they are our instructors from BSAR and have participated in SAR for a number of years. They were honored by the California Emergency Medical Services Administration and received that organizations EMS Service Award for their outstanding contributions to the EMT program in our county.
This luncheon was held in San Francisco and Capt Rose and Lt. Paterson had the opportunity to accompany them on the trip.
After 8 long years the department and the County Board of Supervisors have approved our WEMT program, now known as AEMT. Thanks to Lt. Todd Paterson for assisting Wes Podboy for finally getting this much needed approval. Details of this new program will be discussed at the next SAR Council Meeting in January.
Have you had the chance to visit the main lobby at Headquarters? You should see the changes that have been made. There is now a new display that highlights all of our various volunteer resources in the county of San Bernardino. If you get the chance please stop by, Sgt. Jeff Joling of VF with the help of many have given the lobby a new look. If your team has not sent Sgt. Joling photos of your unit members and activities please do ASAP. Send to www.jjoling@sbcsd.org
The names of Walt Peterson of the Wrightwood SAR unit and Gary Card of the Morongo Basin SAR unit had their names added to the Citizens Volunteer Memorial this past week. A very nice ceremony was held with friends, fellow SAR members and families of both gentlemen attending. Thanks to Arden Wiltshire of Public Affairs, Lt. Paterson, Sgt Joling and Sheriff Hoops for a very nice event. Again, if you have the opportunity, take a look at the Memorial at Headquarters, great additions have been made to make the Memorial even more eye catching.
Elections were held at the last SAR Council Meeting in November. Re-elected to the position of Assistant Director was Frank Kams (West Valley SAR) who has held this position for the last two years. Along with Frank, Mike Ward (SBDO Mtn. SAR) will hold his seat on the board as the Member at Large for being the Immediate Past SAR Council Director.
New members of the Board will be Diana Poe who will replace Christine Stuehrmann as Secretary and Ron Pesch replacing Dave Northrop as the Treasurer. All of us would like to thank Christine for her two you years of service. We would also like to thank Dave for his eight years of service; four years under Mike Ward and four more under myself. Thanks to both of these dedicated individuals for their tireless efforts.
Ron Pesch will be joining us starting January 1, 2011 for two years. Ron is a member of the Victor Valley SAR unit and just was elected to serve as Commander for 2011, the same position he held in 2002. He has been a member of SAR since 1996. Mr. Pesch is an Employment Child Support Officer for the County of San Bernardino, a widower, the father of four children and a grandfather for four grandchildren. In 2009 he joined the BSAR Instructor Team and was a member of the SAR Councils CV Memorial Committee. All of the current board members are looking forward to working with him.
From Rim SAR we have Diana Poe who will be our Secretary. Diana was named the Search and Rescuer of the Year in 2009 from her unit’s station, Twin Peaks and served as their treasurer during that same time. She has been a SAR member for 6 years, is currently employed with Southern California Edison for 15 years as a Planner and is the founder of the Mountain Paranormal Research Organization. She is married to Greg, also a member of Rim SAR, and all of us are looking forward to her contributions in the future.
And then there is the Director’s position! I will once again be serving in that capacity. hief Paul Cook at the last Council Meeting made this announcement if you had not heard.
I want to thank all of the Volunteer Forces staff, Capt Rose, Chief Cook and Sheriff Hoops for recommending and appointing me to fill this position once again. I am honored and humbled! I am very much looking forward to working with all of our SAR personnel and Volunteer Forces in the future. With the personnel at VF that we now have, the ideas and suggestions from our SAR units and the support of the Executive Staff of the Department, great strides will be made to better our SAR capabilities to serve our county over this next two-year term. I am so privileged and I am looking forward to all of us working together once again as… ONE TEAM!
Following are some reminders:
As supporters of the California State Search and Rescue Memorial we now are taking orders for the “Challenge Coin” to help raise funds for this project. You can pre-order these coins by sending a check for $15 for each one. Send a check made out to: IESARC and send it to IESARC, c/o SBDO Co. Sheriff’s Department Volunteer Forces Unit, 655 East Third St., San Bernardino, Ca. 92415.
January 8, 2011 is the date for the Director's Breakfast. This is a request for all SAR Unit Commanders to attend. It will be held at Headquarters and will start at 8 a.m. This breakfast is designed to honor each of our Unit Commanders for 2011 and hopefully we will be giving them a chance to be introduced to the VF staff and each other. We highly recommend that all of our SAR Commanders attend this event.
The first SAR Council Meeting of the new year will be held on January 19. Remember this meeting is for all unit representatives and for any members who wish to attend.
This meeting is held at Headquarters and starts at 7 p.m.
The Commanders and Coordinators Meeting will be held on February 19. A new agenda will be introduced at this year’s affair and the location is being changed. This year we would like all SAR Unit Commanders, Vice Commanders, Training Officers, Secretaries and Treasurers to attend. You will be receiving more information in the very near future. All Unit SAR Coordinators of course will be encouraged to attend as well. Hope to see you all there.
The Search and Rescue Incident Management Team (SAR-IMT) proposal has been approved by Volunteer Forces. After four long years we have the go ahead to form this team for ICS overhead requests. In the next couple of weeks you will be receiving a memo telling you how you can request membership to the team, what the requirements are and when the first meeting of the team will be held. This is going to be another great resource that is being added to our SAR capabilities.
On behalf of all our IESARC Board of Directors, new and old, I want to again wish all of you a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Enjoy this holiday season and we pray that you and your family members remember to be safe.
